Good friend Brian Richards of Cadillac attempted to perch fish yesterday. The high winds forced him to come in early. I know he wishes he could have stayed out because the first perch he caught was 13 inches! I think the 2nd one was 11 inches. Then a few small ones until the wind got so bad, the anchor would not hold. The perch were in eleven feet of water. Another group of guys staying with us also battled the crappy weather yesterday. When the water was at it's lowest a few years ago, they started wearing their waders because quite often they would have to get out of the boat while crossing shallow spots when using the Rapid River launch. They realized they stayed nice and dry though wearing the waders. So now they wear them all the time. Sounds like a plan to me. Anyway, they caught 9 pike, 8 smallmouth, and two walleye working Red Tail Chubs along the drop-offs. Friday, my brother Kenneth attempted to get a charter in, but the weather screwed that up. Though it wasn't really all that bad when he and his client first got on the water, shortly after getting the lines set, the wind shifted straight out of the east and all heck broke loose! They had quite the ride back to the dock taking several waves over the bow. Kenneth said there was 5 inches of water in the boat!!! They both were soaked from head to toe even though both were wearing rainsuits. Me, I'm ready to hit the ice...
Even though I've had some great fishing in the fall, I don't have as much "drive" as I used to. Too many of the days like you describe. This has to be one of the worst Octobers on record!! After hitting it pretty hard since April, it is easy to pull 'em up and head in when the water is crappy, action is slow, weather is cold, rainy and windy. Maybe there are a few flat sunny days left this year.
I agree Frank...this month has been one of the worst Octobers I've seen in years. I'm looking forward to hitting the hard water. I've had three or four trips this month where we literally went out and had to come back in within a couple of hours due to weather....very frustrating! After having some of the best fishing I've ever seen in September, October has been one of the slowest I've seen in a long time. Thanks again for the apples...mmm...mmm...declicious!!!
