Yesterday, I caught a couple throwbacks and then a just legal (15 1/4") walleye right at the end of "primetime". I released it because I didn't want to clean just one fish. Of course a 16 incher then hit about 5 minutes later! This one I kept thinking maybe the bite was going to be late. WRONG, that was it for the evening. Today, I hooked my first walleye just before 4:00 this afternoon. It turned out to be a really nice 27 incher. Took a quick photo and released her. Then it was dead until 5:15 when fish started coming through like gangbusters for the next hour. But most were just little dinks. Ended up catching 5 more dinks plus another "just legal" walleye to go with the 16 incher from yesterday. Bill Druding stopped by this morning with an awesome walleye that was 31 inches and 11 1/2 pounds. He caught it on a #5 GGT Rapala (if I remember correctly). All my fish today also came on smaller baits (#6 Holographic Trout Ice Darter). The action sure isn't too great right now on the bay, but I do think it will pick up when we get some more snow on the ice. It seems like the fish are much less aggressive after losing the snow cover on the ice. Anyone else notice this???
I think the lack of snow and the full moon conditions last weekend were a bad combination. But what the heck...my brother did pretty well on Friday night and I had the bites I needed but just was a little too excited on the hookset and missed em all!
Any of the snow stick on the ice from yesterday or did it all blow away?
Just got in. There's a light dusting of snow covering the whole bay, now.
Marked plenty of fish again tonight. Pretty much steady from 5:30 to 6:20. They were a little more responsive than the last couple trips, but still not what I would call "aggressive." Went 2 for 3 with the 2 I landed just being 15 inches. Too close for my liking, so they went back. Got 1 and lost one on a #1 Red Grape Shiver Minnow. Got the other one on a live rosy red minnow near the bottom on a plain hook.
