11 walleye tonight! 02/25/10

I was fishing by 2:45 this afternoon. I thought I would go out a little earlier and try to get some perch if any came through because I caught a really nice perch in this spot earlier in the month. None came through!!! I had a totally blank screen on the graph until about 20 minutes after 5:00 when I hooked a good fish. It turned out to be a really nice pike about 37-38 inches. It ended up coming off. That was fine with me since I would have released her anyway. Then it was back to deadsville until about 6:15 when I finally hooked another fish. This turned out to be a walleye about 20 inches. I got a really good look at it while my rap was stuck on the bottom of the ice. It ended up coming off too!!! So far it was fish 2, me 0. The next 45 minutes were just crazy though with fish coming through. Sadly, they were all throwbacks with most running 13 1/2 - 14 1/2 inches. I did lose one fish during this time that felt like a keeper, but can't say for sure. I was in 38 feet of water and the fish were absolutely going nuts for the #7 Glowtiger Jigging Rapala kept five feet off bottom. Nothing brought home, but it was nice to have a fair amount of action for awhile anyway. Maybe next time there will be more keepers coming through...

Kevin,  do you usually go out to your pre-planned spot and stay put or do you move if no action or drill and hole-hop?  Also do you bother with tip-ups or stay with jigging and action baits?  Once again I'm threatening to get up there hopefully next weekend(March 6, 7, and 8)and I want to have my game plan down.
Thanks,  Steve

4 for me tonite, fish came through at 6:15 to 6:45.  I ended up catching 4 and losing 2.  4 were 28", 22" 21" and 17" other two lost were keepers probably in the 20" range or so.  Wind was absolutely brutal.

Steve,
For the most part we set-up our shacks and stay put. This is because most of the time we are getting to our spots just shortly before the "primetime" bite. Primetime spots are usually no good during the middle part of the day. So it's not too productive to fish the mid-day hours in the primetime spots. If the weather is decent so it's not too much of a pain to move, a guy can fish the primetime spots early and late in the day, and the deeper basin areas during the middle of the day. It would certainly up your odds for fish. Before the north end shallows got so noisy and crowded (mainly on the weekends), both my brother and I would drill many holes and then hole hop at primetime. It was not uncommon to catch 12-15 keepers an evening doing this. Most of the time we were fishing 8-12 feet of water. When a school of walleye comes to the north end of the bay to feed, it might be 100 fish. But they will be spread out over a large area. So rather than wait for the fish to come to us, we would try and go to the fish. It's amazing how many times you can move to a different hole and pick up a fish right away. If you don't catch anything else in the next five minutes, move to another hole. You can also hole hop along the breaks. My brother Kenneth loves doing this. He will drill several holes about 6 feet apart on the break, then just keep moving hole to hole until he catches a fish. Then he knows what depth along the break the fish are cruising. We catch many more walleye jigging than we do on tip-ups. We still set tip-ups quite often, but if the weather stinks, we don't even bother...

Gary,
Sounds like you had a good evening. What was the hot color for you? Also, I'm kind of geeked since I found a hump that is not on any of the map chips! Theresa caught that 28 incher right on top of it a couple weeks ago. But at the time, I didn't realize it was a hump she was fishing!!!
