Hey Kevin, Not knowing the area very well this may seem like a dumb ? but can you get out on the bay via the Rapid River launch? And is there any good fishing in the "back waters" around the launch? Thanks, Steve
Hey Steve, If you plan on fishing some of the better areas at the north end of the bay for perch like Nelson's Bay or the weeds at the north of end of Center Reef, the Rapid River launch gives you the shortest boat ride. You do need to take it slow going out the bay as the river channel is not too wide with some rock piles scattered about to make it interesting. But as long as a guy takes it slow, you should not have any problems. The rivermouth area of the Whitefish River often holds perch when they are spawning. And usually also holds lots of small male walleye (good eaters) for the first week or two of the season. But that may change this year with the early spring we are having. Captain Jim McDonald http://www.jjmaccharters.com/cedarriver.html told me a couple days ago that the Cedar River already has water temperatures in the low 50's. That is crazy warm for this time of year!!! There are still good numbers of walleye running up the Rapid River at this time, but I think the spawn will be over pretty quick. That should make for an extremely good opener compared to last year as the walleye will be well rested from spawning and the water temperatures should be much warmer than last year too resulting in much more active fish.
