Well...it's almost time to get out on the water in search of ol' marble eyes. I think this years opener should be much better due to the earlier spawn and the warmer weather predicted for opening week. Of course that can change as we all know! I'm sure there will be plenty of tactics tried, but my favorite early season technique is drifting with floating jig heads tipped with crawler halves. It works great when the fish are still a little sluggish from the spawn and in deep water, and it's a really fun way to catch fish. If the water warms up enough then trolling bottom bouncers and Walleyes Choice (http://www.walleyeschoice.com) harnesses can be the ticket. Copper blades and green beads is a sure bet for fishing the early season stained water of the upper bay. If fish aren't being marked on bottom, trolling deep running crankbaits in the top 20 feet can put fish in the boat. We'll be on the water Saturday with everyone else...and we'll post a report when we get back in. Good luck to everybody this opening day and please remember to be courteous to one another. If somebody needs help at a boat launch, offer to give them a helping hand. Idling through packs of boats instead of buzzing through them to get to your spot certainly makes more sense and is much safer. Good luck from all of us in the Bay de Noc area...
