Greetings, I moved to the Marquette area from the eastern UP and I am trying to get a little information on the state of waterfowl hunting in the central UP (specifically LBDN & BBDN). I avidly fished and hunted the EUP (St. Mary's River) for years and now I need to learn a new area. I am not looking for somebody's honey hole, I just want some general infomation. I am very safety conscious because my daughter frequently is my hunting partner. We have fished and scouted LBDN a half dozen times or so, but have never hunted it.
My first question is...Do the bays get a lot of hunting pressure?
Second, on LBDN the area south of Squaw Point (large shallow flats with lots of cover) and the Portage Point area both look promising...are there any reasons to avoid these spots?
Third, the LBDN shoreline is much more developed than the St. Mary's, so how do the residents take waterfowlers hunting off the shorelines? I am aware of the safety zone laws and always abide by them. According to the State of Michigan, the Great Lakes bottomlands below the annual high water marks fall under public access laws. However, local law enforcement does not always comply with the State of Michigan's interpretation of the laws. I have been told by the Marquette PD they feel their jurisdition extends 1 mile into Lake Superior from the city limits. The city statute says no hunting within city limits. Therefore, according to Marquette PD, no hunting on Lake Superior within one mile of Marquette city limits. This was not an issue in Sault Ste. Marie.
Thank you for your consideration,
Chris
PS. Great site by the way. I look forward to contributing to the discussion as I learn the area.

We have some good areas for duck hunting. On Little Bay, the area where the Rapid River dumps into the bay (circled in yellow) is perfect for duck hunting. As is the area where the Tacoosh River dumps in (red). Another popular spot is the point at the mouth of the Day's River (green). You can access both the mouth of the Rapid River and Tacoosh River from the Rapid River boat launch. At the Day's River, there is trail that follows the river (north side) all the way to the mouth. Like you said, the Portage Marsh is also an excellent place to hunt ducks. On Big Bay, we have guys that come up every year and duck hunt Ogantz Bay and do pretty well. They hunt both sides of the Ogantz Bay boat launch (yellow circles). The launch is circled in orange. Hope this helps and good luck...
