The mayfly hatch has waned in the Michigamme and Three Lakes area. With the low pressure system settling in, fishing was a little tougher this weekend.
We had our 5th annual Rock Bass tournament for the kids on Petticoat Lake this past weekend. Eleven boats full of kids and adults caught over 680 rock bass in five hours of fishing on Saturday. Prizes were awarded for biggest rock bass, smallest rock bass, most rock bass, and fewest rock bass caught by the kids. We all shared a picnic lunch and also held a raffle so every kid went home with a full belly and a prize.
We started holding the rock bass tournament because the DNR told our association that Petticoat needed to have rock bass culled out to diversify the fish population. Seems to be working, because our family caught more smallies this year than rock bass. My daughter also boated her 5th blue perch out of Petticoat on Saturday. This one was only nine inches (her two biggest are 13 and 11 inches). I am sill amazed each time I see one little blue fellas. I'll try to post a picture of the larger perch.
