Ahhh...the first ice fishing trip of the year. I was a little jealous of Kevin and Theresa getting out there before me, but today it was my turn to have some fun chasing the ol' marble eyes in the bay. Kevin and I got on the ice and set up around 3 p.m.. I thought there would have been more people out today, but I guess with it being so close to Christmas people probably had other plans. I set up in 30 fow along a sharp break and Kevin went a little deeper and set up in 39 feet. It wasn't long before I started marking fish, and pretty soon I had my first keeper of the season on the ice. It wasn't a big one, just over 15 inches, but a good eater nonetheless. This one bit a #7 green glow tiger jigging Rap. More fish were moving through, but not biting, so I switched to a Williams Wabler (ww30 series) tipped with a minnow tail and immediately got bit. It turned out to be a northern that I released. I went back to the swim baits and released two more sub-legal walleyes on a holographic green/rainbow Ice Darter. Then just before dark fish were coming through pretty consistently and within about 3 minutes I landed two more keepers, a 16 and an 18. I lost one more fish half way up before I heard Kevin hollar "fishing sucks...let's go". He was a little surprised to see I had 3 keepers to his goose egg. That's the way it goes though, last year he beat up on me pretty good, this year's going to be different bro'. Anyways...the ice was about 6 to 8 inches and in good shape and it sure was nice to be out there. The way my kids eat fish...I don't know if these three willl feed us all, I guess I better tell the wife we need a few more . Good luck from all of us in the Bay de Noc area.
Nice bunch of fish Ken. I was in your place this morning and bought a few baits. I went off the Vagabond in 32 fow and ended up with one walley at 16 1/2" One 10" perch and a 24 1/2 " northern. It was my first day on the lake and your brother told me where to go. Thanks Kevin.
Tom, Sorry I wasn't around when you stopped. I sent you a personal message too. As far as the fishing yesterday, I couldn't catch a keeper to save my life... I caught 8 dinks and one small pike about 22 inches. I spent 10 minutes trying to get the pike to hit. What's up with that??? It was the most timid pike I have ever seen! I haven't spoke to anyone that said they did much good yesterday on walleye. I have spoke to some folks that said they were killing the perch with some really nice 12-13 inchers too. The one guy was out off Kipling somewhere, the other guy at the north end. Neither of them narrowed down their location!
