Headed out yesterday afternoon in the rain, fog, sleet, slush and standing water for some "early" spring time fishing. Got all set up in 29 ft of water below the ice and 4 inches of water above the ice. Started marking fish right away and caught one dandy perch and a bunch of pesky dink walleyes. Things slowed for a while , so I sat back and relaxed and watched the rain fall and kept a keen eye on my two tip-ups. A while later I had a flurry of action on the vex and in about 15 minutes caught four more piggy perch and a few eyes just short of the mark. In all the excitement, I forgot about my tip-ups, so I look out my window and no flag up on that one and no ..... what the hell . I thought I put out two tip-ups but only could find one. Son of a B, now I gotta get out in the rain and inspect the situation. Low and behold, I must of set one up in a low spot on the ice , and with all the standing water rushing toward that hole, it widened enough to let my tip-up fall through. Damn, it was brand new too !!! Tried snagging it with a weight and a treble, but I guess I can't catch those either. Guess I need to invent a floating tip up. On a side note, if your brave enough to head out there in this warm slop, be damn careful as I'm sure there are many other holes that opened up. By the time I left , that tip-up swallowing hole was big enough to drop your wheelers tire in . I didn't even like walking near it, and the ride back to the landing had a pucker factor of about 8 on a 1-10 scale. Now I know what my friends mean when they say I'm a tight ass!!!! Good luck and be safe!!! Slammer!!!
