Made a quick road trip this weekend to see my good buddy Capt. Jay Nieman. The 7 hr. drive is never fun, but the fishing is always great. It's nice to have a friend that lives on a private lake full of bluegills and crappies that hardly ever gets fished. Sometimes you get em' and sometimes you don't. However, this past weekend they were definitely biting. In a couple days fishing with him and his 7 yr. old son Trey we ended up cleaning 165 gills and crappies, letting many, many go and even caught some largemouth bass. Those are always fun on 2 lb. test. We gorged ourselves Saturday, eating 52 bluegill fillets for lunch. A short nap took place before we headed out for the afternoon bite, which was phenomenal. I think Sat. afternoon's total was 58 fish kept. I just finished up cleaning the 34 we kept yesterday morning before I packed up and headed home. It's nice to do something different once in a while. Chasing marble eyes is fun, but those blue-gills sure do taste good!!! We were going to meet some friends at Saginaw Bay, boy I'm glad we didn't go there. In 13 hrs. of fishing Saturday, they got skunked on the walleyes.
So you slipped down and cleaned up on some slabs, way to go! Eating tasty bluegills is why we resumed our annual trip to Rice Lake. Deb & I caught and cleaned over 400 (could have hit our limit of 600) last June, we eat them almost every weekend. Ultra lights with long casts, what a blast.
Your family is sure growing! I hope all is well with you!
