FYI...We recommend fishing the upper bay from Gladstone north for walleye. There are so many smelt to compete with south of Gladstone, it's made the walleye bite tough (to say the least). I don't know if I have ever seen this many smelt as far north in the bay as what I have this year. But even north of Gladstone, the bite is still nothing like was a few weeks ago. The perch bite has dropped off too (though not as much as the walleye). Guys are just working a little harder for them now. Maybe the warm temperatures in the forecast will help turn on the walleye. It can only get better!!! My brother Kenneth and I were out a couple days ago and had smelt up the wazoo almost the whole time we fished. It makes for very tough fishing! Neither of us marked anything that we thought was a walleye on our electronics, just buttloads of smelt!!!
Back from San Diego and fished Sunday in the A.M. and the P.M. Did great in the morning south of Gladstone on the west bank icing 4 walleyes from 16 to 26" . Lost a nice one half way up too!!! Didn't mark a lot of fish , but caught almost all I saw. They where very agressive and didn't hesistate to slam it. Caught the last one which was the 26 incher at11:00 on a Blue Ice Darter.......damn, those hooks are sharp!!! Took the Mrs. out for the afternoon bite and set up by 3:45 and marked lots of fish hugging the bottom and would not come off bottom more than 6" . Don't have a camera, are these posibly white fish or do smelt hug the bottom. I did catch one smelt on a small shiver minnow. That's the only thing I ever caught this year on a shiver and my first smelt ever on hook and line . Anyways , I had great expectations for the night bite and we got skunked. I did hook into what felt like a monster , but shook me off half way up again...how the hell they get off like that is beyond me. I get one hook in my pants or jacket and it takes me a 1/2 hour to get it out. Anywho, that's the report and won't get out till tomorrow and then it's back to work for a week. Good luck and we'll let ya know what happens tomorrow. Slammer!!!
Glad to hear you caught some fish. Yours is the only truly good report I have heard in quite some time. Infact, I would say you kicked some butt compared to everyone else I have spoke to lately!!! CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh yah, those fish you marked definately could have been whitefish or smelt. For some reason, the smelt do hug bottom alot of the time inside the bay. Don't know why. Outside the bay I seem to see more schools running vertically up and down in the water column like in the picture. But inside the bay for whatever reason, many times they fan out across the bottom. They have been doing this for years now along the east bank south of Gladstone. Once again, congrats on the great catch!!!
