Smelt running under the ice???

Had an old guy in the store a few years ago that told me many, many years ago the smelt used to run under the ice. Well...................I just rented a room to a guy that lives down in Cedar River who has a friend that works on the boats in Marinette. His friend had to dive down under a boat to do his work or inspection or whatever he was doing. Anyway, he said the smelt were thicker than thieves! Anyone know how much open water there is by the highway bridge? Might just be worth shining one of these nights. Just passing it on....

The ice is out from the dam, (Hattie st. bridge) to past the interstate bridge. Rest of river to mouth still iced. no  Spotty walleye/trout action below dam and from Hattie street catwalk.  I heard that some fish had smelt in um..  As for the Cedar last I knew it was still iced.. Bay is open and then closed with ice at mouth of Cedar so if it open's for a bit it should go.  Friend fished tip-up's last weekend off boat's (Ruleau's fishing) in river and said 15" of ice..
