It's really sad that the tribe has no respect for their own laws or the judge who handed down the original sentences. Lots of discussion about a civil lawsuit now...
I have already e-mailed congressman Dan Benishek voicing my wishes for none of my tax dollars to go to the Sault tribe. They say they are a sovereign nation. Well, if this sovereign nation won't do anything to deter this illegal activity, then they should not receive any federal monies (our tax dollars) in my view. Remember, congress is trying to make budget cuts, how about all you folks out there join me and e-mail congress and give them some suggestions of what to cut!!! This really saddens me because every tribal member I have spoken too about this is just as pissed as I am and it puts a black eye on the whole tribe. Some have even told me they are embarressed at how the tribe has handled this. So folks, please don't let this make you carry a grudge against the whole tribe when it's just a few bad eggs that have allowed this to happen. One of the bad eggs is Tom Miller. More on that when I get done eating...
Ok, I'm done eating. Anyway, from what I hear, this guy Tom Miller and a lady by the name of Denise Chase have pushed the tribe all along not to punish the Schwartz brothers for their crimes. Some may remember an earlier article I posted http://captjimcaptken.activeboard.com/forum.spark?aBID=124875&p=3&topicID=39276485 where this lady actually said the poor brothers were being treated unfairly. Hello...it's simply a case of punishing those that have broke the law. What part of that do you not understand Mrs. Chase??? In the April issue of the tribes newspaper, Tom Miller once again voiced his view saying "The fishing fiasco continues in the Bays de Noc area with two of the commercially licensed fisherman being tried in Delta County court". Fiasco??? It's only a fiasco because of the tribes preference to make it an issue about treaty rights, rather than simply punish those individuals who BROKE THE LAW! The tribes newspaper is on-line http://www.saulttribe.com/index.php?option=com_docman&task=cat_view&gid=67&Itemid=169 and Tom Miller's opinion is under the heading "DNR attempting to control our treaty rights" on page 26 of the pdf document. My question to the tribe is why do you protect those that cause you so much trouble? Oh wait a minute, that's right, someone told me that Denise Chase is an aunt of the Schwartz brothers. If that's true, then she should have recused herself in this case just as a judge does when there is a conflict of interest. Otherwise I would have to say the tribal government is just as corrupt as our government!!! I'm on the board of the Convention and Visitors board and will be bringing up the civil lawsuit at our next meeting and I know it will also be discussed at the next meeting of the Bays de Noc Great Lakes Sportfisherman meeting as well. Once again, please e-mail your congressman and tell them where you think congress can make some cuts in the up coming budget debate!!!
It is a pathetic display of so called "justice ". You know when the sentences were handed down some said it was harsh, some said not harsh enough and others that it was fitting...but at least there was a consensus that something was done about the illegal activity and perhaps this would give others thinking of similar actions pause before proceeding.
Kevin, there are people reading here and elsewhere and we are willing to be supportive in any way we can, fyi.
