July 28th Frustration!

Yesterday was very frustrating for me, not because the fish didn't bite, they were doing their part, but mostly because of the lack of common courtesy and fishing etiquette that some of these Cabela's / MWC guys have.  I love having the tournaments here and have some very good friends and guests that stay with us that fish them, but just like anything...when you're dealing with lots of people there's bound to be some bad apples.  Clients Don and Char and myself started out yesterday pitching jigs along a weedline in 8 feet of water.  We were catching lots of short fish and just got into the keepers when two tourney guys drove right up the weedline in 8 feet of water just staring at his graph.  Now...unless there's some new electronics out there that I don't know about...I'm not really sure what he thought he was going to see.  You're not going to mark fish in 8 fow.  When he got close enough that I could cast in his boat I said something to him to let him know he just ruined our fishing.  All he could come up with was, "There's lots of weeds here".  NO KIDDING!!!  He then proceeded to go in a circle around us and headed back down the weedline and right next to some people that were anchored perch fishing.  Needless to say, we pulled our lines in and headed elsewhere.  When we got to our next spot we were trolling Walleyes Choice harnesses in 8 to 10 feet of water where yesterday's wind dirtied it up a bit.  As soon as we got set up on our first pass...Bang!  We got a nice 21 incher and then another keeper about 2 minutes after that.  There was only one other boat in the area and he must have seen us catch the fish and he turned around and went over the area we caught the fish, which is fine.  The only bad part was we didn't see them catch any fish and he must have got frustrated.  He pulled his lines in, fired up his 250 hp. motor and about swamped us when he took off!  Well...you can't drive 250 hp motors over spooky fish in 9 feet of water and expect them to keep biting.  We never caught another fish in that spot and had to move elsewhere.  It takes a lot to get me fired up...but when I see fellow anglers act like that it gets the blood boiling a little.  We ended up with 5 nice walleyes before we decided to call it a day.  When cleaning the fish, many of them had alewives in their bellies, which sure is making for some fat fish, but it can make the fishing tougher too because they have so much to feed on.  Good luck from all of us in the Bay de Noc area.

I know PWC guys used to hang out at the Log Cabin. Give em a piece of your mind. Is the Tournament this weekend? I was thinking of going over to fish sometime this weekend and with my little boat I would have been in the drink if he pulled that stunt on me So If I want to get into some Eyes just pull in next to your boat eh? lol

We''ll have to put a gps tracking device on the Warrior, but with the "300" he'd lose me in about 4 seconds. wink   I guess I'd rather be IN his boat anyway to better my odds of getting some walleye.

sorry to hear about the way things went for you on your outing I am a tournament fisherman and yes there are some bad apples. they should be reported to the tournament director as that is not the way they should act. it gives all us a bad rep. again I am sorry for what they did and maybe when we get there I will look you up and tell you face to face how sorry I am for there actions. Jay

I experienced some of the same type of thing yesterday, the 31st. Pulling harnesses off black bottom, quite a few boats just looking around or up on top of the break. After the net came out a few times, we had plenty of company. AS you mentioned Ken, some were just "looking", but when they are running just outside of your boards, or pulling in front of you to set up, it can get a little frustrating. To be fair, I imagine many of the boats are here for the NIT, and may not be at all familiar with the area or even Great Lakes fishing with the clear water etc. I express my best wishes to all that are visiting here, being an apple farmer, I know that one bad one (or a few) doesn't spoil the whole bunch. We ended up with a very nice bunch of fish up to 20 1/2", but had to get out of the traffic. A tip to the competitors---Don't drive over the fish you are trying to catch, at the end of your run, go out and around. Good Luck to all, be safe.

I was going to drive over in a couple of days but I guess I'll wait a few. I'm guessing that Jay told his buddies in no uncertain terms you guy's comments

Ok, wasn't gunna say nothing but now that I see others had problems..  Trolling yesterday in bay over structure we were the only one fishing the area and a guy pre-fishing come a couple boat lengths in front of us and stopped right in our trolling pattern in the middle of stucture and turned his back to us... My father in law was driving and he stood up and belted out a few p's and q's... and had to crank the boat so our board didn't hit him.  After the ordeal my father in law appoligized to us for his actions..  I just said takes all kinds to make the world go round.  Before you know it 12 boats were working the structure so we moved off.  All the rest of them were courtious I must say just the one ass and he knows who he is so if he reads this I hope next time we cross path's I can return the favor.   Maybe on tounament day I should take out my PWC and go looking for him......hmmmmmm.. Not I won't stoop to his level.  True sportsman respect the environment and their actions.

As for Jay and all the others in the tourney, much respect and I wish you the best of luck...

War on the Open Seas-Hope the Courteous ones win the tourny. I've only fished little tournaments in my area and what I don't get, I guess I'm Dumb, is that they know you guys are locals and know where the fish are. Why don't they just observe what they see you guys doing and then just mark on their Locators where you are?
