Bays de Noc Fishing Info
Permalink

Hi Folks,

I am planning a trip to Little Bay de Noc for a few days of fishing the end of this month. I've read the Michigan fishing regulations and noticed that a person can possess 3 limits of fish. Three limits is legal, but what is acceptable to you folks who live and fish there? Also, at what size do you prefer walleyes are released to spawn again? Maybe none of this is as important on the Great Lakes as it is on small Minnesota lakes, but I don't want to get run out of town for taking too many fish on my first trip there. I've heard a lot about your area and plan on returning if it's as good as I've heard. Any info you can give me will be greatly appreciated! You can throw in a fishing tip or two also if you don't mind.

Thanks,

Paul

Hey Catcher,

Nice to have u on board...  I am certain a person like you that is inquiring about ethics and conservation has no problem with a catch.  Currently their is no slot limit but it is coming back.  The slot is one over 23".  You sound like a guy that I wouldn't mind havin around anyways..  Just the fact that you inquire shows you care and besides the short time you are here you could never do any damage to the fishery so use your judgement and keep what you want.. tight lines (if you return next year I believe the slot will be in place)

Hey catcher----vacationed on the bay for 12 yrs---liked the fishing and the area and the people so much we bought a cottage on the bay----so be careful--fishing Little Bay can be expensive----If I keep a over 23 he goes on the wall--plenty of eaters out there--have fun--be careful it is big water

Thanks for the info guys! I rarely keep a fish over 23" anyway, I'd rather eat the 15-20 inchers. Here in Minnesota the protected slot is 18-28" so the small ones is all I can keep, when I can find them. Catching bigger fish is fun, but I do like a fish dinner once in a while! Thanks for the warnings Randy. Since I'm semi-retired I may just buy a home there instead of a cottage. The hotspots map I have says Little Bay de Noc is 32,000 acres, it looks bigger than that. I am familiar with big water though. I grew up fishing Lake St Clair near Detroit and now fish 132,000 acre Mille Lacs and Lake Superior in Minnesota. I like big water, it keeps the jet skis farther away!

If the fish get going for you at that time, you may very well catch numerous fish over the 23" mark, especially if you fish at night. Keeping a few larger fish is a choice. My personal feelings are that 23's and a little larger are not really to big to keep. Most of that size are males anyway. On a trip where you are traveling here, enjoying the resources, helping to support the local area, take home as many fish as you are comfortable with. Those of us lucky enough to be "locals" have a different perspective. Use your own values, if you want to keep a wallhanger or whatever else the regulations state, or go catch and release, just have fun. Spending a day with Capt. Ken will jump you way ahead on the curve. If you see a white Tracker Tundra in the parking lot, c'mon over. Enjoy, Frank

Thanks Frank,

I'll look for you. I'll be staying at Sall-Mar Resort since I've been picking Kevin's brain for info on the area this summer. I'll be in a red Ranger, so feel free to do the same!

I will be there the same time Paul and his group are there, so there is a pretty good chance you will meet Frank. Frank, my brother Patrick, and I will be fishing together for several days........hopefully the weather cooperates.
