I use this trick myself, and sometimes mix it up by putting a slightly longer piece of crawler on the tail hook instead of the middle. Husky Jerks and stick baits work well doing this, but some of the higher action lures like Reef Runners will blow out if too big of a piece is used. I'm convinced it helps at times, especially when the water is cold.
