Did some more fishing again today in Kates bay. I managed to ice 12 decent perch. I had one slab right at the edge of the hole and off he came. Yup...Back down the hole he went. Grrrrrrrr Then later I had on around 12 or 13 inches in my hand and was getting a bite on the other line so I threw it in the corner of the shack. As I was reeling it in two little flops and down the hole he goes....Grrrrrr again. lol My best lure was one Kev and Ken gave me to try out on perch. It did pretty good. I would tip the head end with a minnow head and tip the tail end with a minnow tail. It was working for me.
Looks like the average size was pretty awesome. Great job Tom! One of our vendor drivers was out with his son the other day and they caught 17 perch. But get this...the smallest was 10 1/2 inches! They were fishing on Little Bay. He told me where they caught them but asked me not to put it on the board so I won't. When you put a specific spot up on the board and then 500 people show up to pound the same area, it doesn't do anyone any good. Some folks just don't know how to keep it quiet at "primetime". Though noise is a bigger factor in spooking walleye than perch. But still, if someone asks me not to put their "hotspot" on the board, I don't. Over the years, I think I've witnessed about 7 or 8 walleye heading for my bait until someone made a loud noise and the fish swam off and never came back. I was fishing of the Terrace once several years ago and had three different fish heading for my lure over a about a half hours time. Three times some "knob" made a loud noise and the fish swam off and never returned. First it was a tailgate being slammed, then a guy slammed his shanty door shut, the third time it was just a hand auger that was drilled slightly in the ice but came lose and fell over banging on the ice. I can't remember how deep I was fishing. I don't think I could see bottom, but could see the fish when they rose off bottom slightly to hit my lure. That day comes to mind every time I think about walleye getting spooked by noise. Guess I've rambled on enough...
Hey Tom, I'll have ya know I look forward to your post every day when I get outta work to see what I missed.. Your reports are informative and keep all of us rivited until your next adventure... I appreciate all of them even the one's that don't seem like ya got much because that is the whole experience of fishing this beautiful area... Ya take the bad with the good and it makes you appreciate the good even more.... thanks for all your post my friend...
Hey Tom,
Thanks for the report, but, I gotta ask.......... What the hell did you do with the middle (body) of the minnow??? LOL Maybe chumm uh??
It looked gorgeous out my window at work today. I'm jealous.
Is there anything better than perch.......I think not. Well, maybe Burbot .
Slammer!!!
I look forward to Tom's reports too. He posts excellent reports! I get the feeling you took my previous remarks as a jab at Tom. Not in the least and I'm sorry if they came across that way. I just started rambling! Didn't have anything to do with Tom's report (if that's what you thought). I just started thinking about the delivery driver asking me not to post the exact location he fished, that's all...
Slammer
I just might agree with you on the Burbot! Have to give it a little more thought ok, I thought about it and I agree!
Tom
If you are talking about the lure in the picture, I'm not sure that is one of the lures we gave you??? That looks like a #2 or #3 Rainbow Trout Jigging Rap. Guess it doesn't really matter where it came from anyway as long as it's working, right! Stop by the next time you come thru, have a couple others for you to "field test"...
LOl.. Hey Kevin,,,, No way did I take it as a slam.lol Besides Tom has alot thicker skin than that... (so do I) JUst glad to see someone gets out and enjoys the outdoors... Like slammer says, it looks good from work....Grrr... So tomarrow early morn while u guys are trying to jig a lunker we will have our brains on the ice and not at work anyways..
