Well, I was all set to go bluegill fishing again, when I realized I haven't been fishing on the bay since Dec. 11th. I had all my panfish gear ready to load in the van and I changed my mind and decided to go after walleyes. I picked an old waypoint on my gps and made the 6/10ths of a mile walk (need the exercise). Got set up and was fishing by 3:30. I marked my first fish at 3:50 and it slammed a #7 glow hot perch jigging Rap. I then had a lull in the action while some guys were zig-zagging their way down the bay towing shanties looking like they were either lost or didn't know where they wanted to set up. Eventually things settled down and the fish got active again. The next 90 minutes was some pretty good fishing. I landed 6 legal fish and lost three on the way up to the hole. #8 holographic purple and holographic blue/green Ice Darters did most of the damage, but I did land a nice fish on a tip-up that I released. I had my limit way before dark and was packing up when my flag went up and I got the last fish of the night. All in all it was a fun afternoon on the bay...and nice to know some of my old waypoints still produce fish! Maybe I will give the panfish a break and start fishing eyes. Hmmmmm....so many fish-so little time, decisions...decisions...fresh bluegill or fresh walleye? I was in 31 fow and had the spot all to myself. Here's some pics from today, good luck from all of us in the Bay de Noc area.
Good job buddy! I'm really glad you had a great evening on the bay. This is going to get Theresa all fired up so I guess I better get all of our stuff prepped and ready to go...
Nice report Ken.... In case anyone was wondering yes Saturday still sucks to be at work.... Grrrr... Man going into walleye withdrawal.. Thanks for report I know I will get out some day soon...
I'll be passing through your area the end of February on my way to Onaway from Minnesota. Is the season still open then? Looking at these pics kind of makes me want to leave a couple days early and give it a try. Believe it or not we're having trouble here in Minnesota making ice on my favorite walleye lake.
Our ice season is a little different than normal here.
I can not rember a winter like this! I do however remember when I was in school Dec. we always had ice so thick you needed a chain saw to cut our spearing holes for X-Mas Vacation. Very strange season indeed!
