Hi Guys,

So I've been looking to beef up the crankbait selection and it's often tough to decide if the "more of this" or "more of that" is what's needed. It occurred to me that I've been somewhat "predictable" when it comes to what baits I buy. Usually one of three types: Rapala HuskyJerks, Smithwick Rogues, or Reef Runners. First off, anyone have any other baits they'd be willing to suggest? Colors are colors, as it's a certainty that as soon as I buy 10 of orange they'll be chasing purple. I'm more looking for style/model types than colors, but if you're willing to throw that in, all the better.

In researching a few "new baits", I saw this Rapala Flat Rap and wondered if it's been tried by anyone for walleye? Looks like it's been designed primarily for bass, but FLW editors liked it's slow-speed action.

Any info is appreciated. It's always fun to hear how the new lures and designs fair when attempting to fool Bay de Noc walleyes!

Thanks,

Mike

Well...there are soooooo many good cranks out there today, and each one has it's place, however, here are a few of my favorite that have produced very well for me over the years.

  • MATZUO PRISM SHAD--This bait comes in both shallow and a deep diver, but is one of my favorite lures for trolling in the "big water".  The purple prism and "shiner" colors are my favorite, but there are days when the blue/orange belly works best.
  • BOMBER LONG A--Another classic crankbait, but one that gets overlooked by lots of anglers.  By far my favorite color is the silver prism with blue back.  Won a tourney a few years ago out here trolling it in deep water with leadcore, so it has a special place in my boat!
  • CHALLENGER MINNOWS--Comes in both shallow and deep diving varieties, good rattles, and good colors available.  It is one of my go to cranks in the fall.  The "trout" colored baits have worked very well for me as well as anything with purple on it.

There...a few of my favorites that are ALWAYS in my boat, along with the hundreds of Raps, Rogues, Reef Runners, etc..  awwblankstaresmile
