Wife had the day off from work, sooooo...to the ice I went! Got out with Kevin and Theresa again, only my 2nd trip of the ice season. I think we got all set up by around 2 p.m.. It was pretty slow fishing for the first couple of hours, then it got much better real quick (for some of us). First I saw Kevin doing the "missed a fish" dance. You know...the one where arms are flailing around, and all you hear are undistinguishable profanities followed by a slow shake of the head back and forth.
For the next 90 minutes I had a lot of fun. First...I tried a bait that I made last year that I call "midnight". It's got the look of a jigging Rap, but a few additions and it's a hand-painted color. Today it was the ticket!!! Except for one keeper that I landed on a tip-up, I was able to land 3 nice fish jigging and lost the biggest fish of the day that would have been my limit fish. I finally got it to hit about 8 feet off bottom, but my rod tip was over my head and I didn't get a good hook set. It's alright, I think it would have been big enough that I would have released it anyways...it felt pretty hefty.
As I was cleaning the fish, one of the walleyes stomachs was pretty full. I pulled it out and checked to see what was in its belly and there were three minnows...one of which was about a 3 inch smelt (the smell gave it away...they have their own distinct smell). Overall it was a great few hours on the bay and I was able to get some fish for the table. Kevin landed one keeper walleye and a nice perch and Theresa finally got a skunk (she usually kicks our butts). Good luck from all of us in the Bay de Noc area, be careful out there as the ice along the shoreline is pretty soft in spots. I'm sure by Sunday morning it will be pretty firmed up, supposed to get pretty cold tomorrow night.
Personally, I think if "one" does not have several of "one's" hand painted lures so "one's" relatives can use them, "one" should not use them!!! All kidding aside, it was a fun time. I was doing a dance because the fish I lost felt like it about 6-7 pounds. Was really nice out there until it started raining again...
