Tried a new spot yesterday on the upper bay and set up in 16 ft of water on the edge of a break that drops down to 23 ft. Set up at 2:30 pm and started marking fish right away to my surprise. Marked fish pretty steady right till dark which was nice for a change. Perch were finicky until I finally found the right combo, which was a white glow and silver swedish pimple with a minnow head. Man , give them perch some head and their finally satisfied . I usually like to hang a perch eye on the pimp , but only caught a few on that, they much prefered the minnow head. Quite a few dink walleye early also. After 5:00 , switched to swimming baits for the walleye night bite. The eyes were racing toward the baits , but most would just stop , drop and roll. Missed a few and ended up with two jigging and one on a tip-up sucker combo . Ended up with 13 dandy perch and 3 eyes, biggest eye was 17.5 and perch was 13.973" exactly. Good Eats!!! Good Ice conditions , other than slippery . Almost time to take the truck out . Can't get out for a week now so keep us posted. Slammer!!!
Slammer...Do you use the single hook on the pimple or the treble hook. I cought a whitefish yesterday with a single hook on rthe smallest pimple. Do you the flippers thar come with them?
Hey Tom, I only use the treble hook, although sometimes I'll put on a smaller treble. When searching for perch , I always start with something white and it's gotta have a little red on it, so I usually have the little red flipper on it. I'm a big fan of that little red flipper and a big fan of blood red hooks. Years ago, I learned from an Old Timer that was the best fisherman I will ever know, that when it comes to perch, ya gotta give them something with red..... hook, bead, blade, plastics, jigs ect... I love the white russian spoons with a little red bead for perch, works on just about any body of water. Catch that first one with a waxie and then switch to a perch eye is my go to bait. As far as the whitefish go, I 'm no expert as I only catch them by accident when in deeper water south of Gladstone which is Ok by me , as I just can't stand to eat the damn things. Don't know why , but I think I'm the only one that hates whitefish and I've tried them every way imaginable. Good luck and let us know what works best for ya. Slammer!!!
Slammer, You are not the only one that find Whitefish discusting! I have tried them 3 times, and all 3 times have just about gagged!!! My wife loves them...
Actually I lied . I like them smoked, but then again they taste pretty much like any other smoked fish. Once you brine something and smoke it , other than texture they all taste the same, depending on what I'm smoking!!! Slammer!!!
