I got on the ice a little after 4:30 this afternoon and had fish coming through right away but could not get them to bite. I was trying my fourth color lure when guest Joe Volpe showed up. I now had the #8 Holographic Purple Ice Darter on and picked up a 17 1/2 incher. Then lost a 5-6 pounder right below the hole! Then I picked up an 18 1/2 incher. Then Joe caught a 17 1/2 incher. Then I was on the phone with my brother and lost another decent fish. Next time I'm hanging up before the fish hits! Had two more nice fish come unhooked too, so I could have had my limit this evening. Time to sharpen some hooks I guess. During this time, Joe caught another nice fish of 19 1/2 inches. The fish were coming through and biting while it was snowing and dark out. But then the snow stopped and the sky lightened up and the activity slowed to a crawl. Wish I would have went out earlier...
Bite was good, starting around 4pm yesterday, so I tried to get out earlier today. I only marked two fish between 4 and 5, so you probably didn't miss too much.
Would have been a great bite tonight if they would have stayed attached, (you're not the only one, Kevin!) Ended the evening landing four fish, (two were just short of 15 inches,) losing one legal fish, and missing at least four more good bites. Assorted #9 Raps and #2 Shivers.
For those wondering, we ended up with 4 or 5 inches of new snow on the ice. Drifting wasn't too bad. It's a heavy, wet snow, so it shouldn't blow around too much. Temps in the mid 30's this week should knock it down pretty fast. Should be easy getting around for the last few days of the season.
I'll be too busy at the shop for the next few days to fish, so have at them folks!
Kev and Chris you two sure can slay the walleyes. Maybe next year you'll let me tag along with you to learn some on fishing them. Good luck on the rest of the season.
