August, in my opinion, has always been the best month of the year for numbers of walleye on Little Bay de Noc. The biggest reason being that it's usually the time of peak water temperature. The warmer the water...the faster their metablolism and the more they have to eat. There are several good areas to fish in August. The reefs out from Kipling, the "Black Bottom" area along the outer bay's east bank, and the hump in the center of the bay from Gladstone south are all good area to fish in August. For smallies, they are pretty much scattered about along any sharp break throughout the bay, weed pockets along these sharp breaks are hot spots! Casting tubes is my favorite method for the smallies. Anything goby colored is good. For the walleyes I'd suggest Walleyes Choice harnesses trolled behind bottom bouncers at 1 mph. I-51, I-76, I-62, I-81 and I-42 are my best colors. Planer boards are not absolutely necessary, because the fish tend to be in slightly deeper water (25-35 feet), but for covering more water, running multiple lines, or trying for suspended fish, they are a must. Oh yeah...night fishing can also be good long-line trolling above the shallow weed flats from Gladstone north. You'll want a map of the bay...that always eliminates some guesswork and shows the spots to stay away from. Good luck...
