I know this is a little premature as ice fishing is a few months away but I am thinking of buying a few tip ups before ice up and would like to get some input from the tip up fishermen? I know everyone has a personal preference of each brand and the pro's and con's of his or her tip ups.

My brother Kenneth uses the "standard" polar tip-up. I prefer the HT Polar Extreme (picture) that covers the hole because I hate having to clean ice out of the hole all the time if it's really cold out! Always nice to have an unfrozen hole when you go to pack up at the end of the day. There is also a small tackle box on the top to keep extra hooks and sinkers handy. They slide right into a 5 gallon bucket too, which works great to keep/protect them when not in use. After talking with you yesterday, I'm all fired up to get on the ice too!!!
To early my ass. Could be right around the corner with any luck.
The last few years I started purchasing one new one a year and am really liking the HT brand round polar tip up. They make a yellow one that is the big game tip up that I like better than the orange one . The big game one has a larger spool (not that I need that much line) but it's easier to reel in and it seems smoother. They cover the hole nice and never had one frozen in. Has a nice tall telescoping flag and they stack nice in a 5 gallon pail. Am gonna buy two more. I've had the old regular black plastic polar tip ups for the last 20 years and they are still going strong(most). I hate the Beaver Dam tip ups, always have and always will. Don't ask!!!
One more nice thing about the round polars is the little compartment built in that can hold my extra leader, sinke , hooks, light. Usually saves me a trip back to the shack.
Damn you, now I got the itch and won't sleep tonight thinking about new ice fishing purchases. Catch ya on the Ice, Slammer!!!
Sorry guys, Couldn't resist.. Like beaver dam but I do have the HT and polar also...They work fine also.. It all depends on the weather and if ya like clearin holes and stretchin the ol legs.. even use the automatic fisherman and it can work too... Can never have too much gear...
Yup...HT polar tip-up, filled with 12 lb. black dacron, ball-bearing swivel, 3-4 feet of 6 or 8 lb. Seaguar "Carbon Pro" leader line, two #7 split shot, and finally a size 8 or 10 Mustad treble hook. Then, when it's time to go fishing...leave it home because you'll get most of your fish jigging and it's a real pain to go work on a tip-up when the fish are coming through. Sometimes you can get 2 or 3 jigging in the time it takes to pull one in on a tip-up, re-bait...etc.. All kidding aside...I will probably start setting more tip-ups since I'll be taking the kids more often. Although...I remember a day last March when my 4 yr. old out-fished me jigging!!! That usually doesn't happen...no-matter what my brother or WalleyeGuy might say...
