Makin' ice...

While walking my dogs this morning, the brisk (fricken darn cold!) air got me thinking about a trip last season just about this same time of year when the ice was really poppin'. The camera's microphone really picked up the noise from the ice. It starts at about the 3 minute mark. Just thought I'd repost because it was really cool!!!

If I were a submariner I'd be sheeting myself with that noise. It was that loud last Sunday when it got dark. Cool!

I use 20 lb. Power Pro with a 2 foot leader of 17 lb. flourocarbon. Haven't lost a fish yet due to the line breakingfurious.  Haven't noticed any fewer hits either!!!  I did snap a pole off though right at the handle onceconfuse. Ahhhhhh, I remember that day well. I can still see ol' Bertha laying there on the ice in two pieces (god rest her sole). The loss I felt that morning was unbelievable and it still pains me to this day. I have yet to come across a pole as sensitive as "Bertha" was. She was a feisty old fishin' rod that had a lot of backbone and had caught many walleye. Rest in peace "Bertha", some day you and I will fish again in that big Fish Trap in the sky...

I don't use anything that big, I use 6 lb. line for everything. Weather is is finicky bluegills or just panfish in general. When it comes to walley...whitefish or burbot I still use 6 lb. line. Even when trolling for walleyes I stick with the 6 lb. line. I have yet to break off a fish do to line failure. I know if I horsed them in I would break off but I like to play my fish a little before I bring them in. But that's just a matter of choice in my line selection. Everyone likes something different.
