1-26/1-27 report

1-26

Went out off the yaht club again. Set up at 4 and it was LOUD out there. Anyway started marking fish about 5. Marked about a dozen and got the 3 to bite.(Thanks for posting the pic Kevin) It was weird though, they would come in but wouldn't hit what I had down. I would throw a different rap down and they would hit. All 3 did the same. #7's green glow tiger, clown, and firetiger took the fish. I was surprised to catch any for as many people were out their and how loud they were.

1-27

Wanted to fish same spot tonight but too many people there. I went way south on the east bank(south of the terrace) Set up in 32fow. Only marked 3 fish with the last one being a quality mark. Had it on for couple cranks and my leader broke. DEPRESSING! I was using a #9 ghp rap. There was 8 inches of ice down there.

I use power pro line and about a 2foot leader. What is everyones opinion on using a leader. I use 10lb for the leader. I seem to get more action with a leader than with the swivel tied right to the power pro. I think I just need to check and change my leader more often from nicks in it.

Thanks for the report Ed. I too use Power Pro for the mainline (20 lb). But I use 17 lb flourocarbon for the leader. Have never broke off. Here is how I ended up using such heavy line for a leader... When I used to guide in the winter, it was not uncommon to have clients every now and then who might only ice fish once or twice a year. Well, needless to say, sometimes they would get excited and horse a big fish and invariably the line would break off with the fish right below the hole (mostly on tip-ups). So I thought I would go heavy to keep this from happening. After I switched to heavy leaders on my tip-ups, we never lost another fish at the hole. Did not have any reduction in the number of hits either because of the heavy leader. Once I realized the heavy leader did not scare off the fish (or make them drop the bait), I tried it on my jigpole and had the same results. Actually, I think I get more hits with the heavy leader sometimes because it slows the fall of my jig due to the drag of the thicker line. Something to think about...

I just fished LBDN for the first time this week and was wondering if the Yacht Club is the same as the Harbor?....I know, stupid question, but I'm trying to get my landmarks correct. I fished one spot a local called the "Harbor". I'm thinking it's the same spot that bottle bass calls the Yacht Club.

Thanks a ton BB....trying to get a better idea of the area and lingo.  Loved it over there.  Much different than our fishery.

I use pretty much the same set up as you bottle bass. I use 20# Power Pro and 10# Seaguar flourocarbon leader material with ball bearing swival and then a duo lock snap at the end. Have not had any break offs yet this year (fingers crossed). Last year I did have several break offs and I was using standard 10# vanish flourocarbon instead of the leader material. I also use the palomar knot for tieing it all together. Easy knot to tie and holds well.      Anyway while i'm here i'll post todays report.

2-27 -   Fished in the morning from around 8AM to 9:15AM off the Yacht Club in 29 FOW. Landed 2 fish on #9 Glow Tiger. One 19" and one 20". Fished again in the evening from 4:15 till around dark and caught 3 more. 2 on #9 Glow Red Tiger, a 16" and the other was close to 17" and the 3rd on #7 Gold Flourescent Red that was 21". I added a pic but not sure if I used the right format. Looks ok in preview but we'll see I guess.

Nice Slipknot... very nice. Oh BB I use the same as Slip with leader length of 16-22.  Kev, interesting with action on heavy leader.  I am gunna have to rig one and try.  Not for break problem but for different action.  These damn things seem to have a better brain than me most of the time... Something different in presentation and it usually triggers,(Y I have rods at the ready)  but I have NEVER changed leader dia....

I only use 6# line for all my fishing if it's for pan fish...perchin...trolling or jigging walleye and whitefish. I never have a break off with the light line and I like to have the challenge of fighting the fish to try and land him. I'm bettin a lot of people will disagree with me on this.

I'm only using 8# P-Line Fluorocarbon for a leader too Tomjohn. Never had an issue. I'm running P-Line Fluroclear as a mainline. My buddy over here on Munuscong is a really good fisherman and uses 6# religously. He's had quite a few 10-12# fish on the ice too.

I don't just use a 6# leader. ALL the line on my reels are 6#.
