I posted this on another forum as well, but I figured maybe people here on this one would be more up for discussion.
With the crazy winter/spring (where?) we're having, anyone care to speculate on the differences in the opener this year as opposed to years past? I'm thinking we'll see fish barely spawned, if at all, and a ton of fish moving up river and dumping out of the river. I would say this, coupled with less emerging weeds due to lack of sunlight/warm water, would bode well for the fishing. With the bulk of cold water, I'd have to say the slower the approach the better.
Anyone care to share their thoughts on how this weather/late ice cover will impact the opener? Has anyone visited the river this year to see if the fish have moved up yet? I'd find it hard to believe, but eventually it's gotta happen. I talked to someone who lives near Amasa who said he's got 3-4 feet of snow at the moment. That's a ton of cold, cold water yet to run-off.
Thanks to all who contribute. We're between seasons, so if I can't actually fish, I'd like to talk about it!
The water will be cold and muddy with all the late winder run off. That means the fish will be sticking close to the river mouths and lots of them. They will likey be lathargic so a slow jigging presentation will likey yeild some fish.
Yup, the slower the better will be on order for the start of the season this year. Drifting super slow with floating jigs should be real good. Opening day getting closer and closer...
Anyone seen an update on lake levels? Living in Grand Rapids and watching the Grand River rise, and rise, and rise, I've gotta think this has helped things some. What a flood down here. When CSX sends a train onto a bridge to help hold it down, you know there's an issue.
Another crap-tastic day of rain/snow mix down here has me wondering if I'll be putting up the shanty in my boat for opener on LBDN!
They seem to have come up some from what they were a couple moths ago. But, they may not have come up as much as it appears. The fricken wind blows every day it seems, so things might be diffferent if we ever get to see the level after a couple days with no wind...
Anybody got an update on Ice or open water conditions on Garden Bay. Selling any minnows yet Kev??
Someone just told me today that Garden Bay still has ice. Must be some open water somewhere since someone called and said they would be stopping in the morning for 10 dozen wigglers and 10 dozen waxworms. I didn't take the call, so I don't know who it was. The dock is in at Rapid and there is enough open water to fish at the north end. At least there was yesterday. It's possible the wind today moved some ice back to the north, but can't say for sure. Native Americans have been checking the river the past couple nights looking to spear walleye, but the walleye haven't started coming up the river yet. Be aware of their nets in the narrows at Gladstone too if you go out perch fishing. The nets I saw are just south of Saunder's Point. You could almost launch a boat yesterday at Gladstone and it's possible you might have been able to today, but I didn't see the launch today. Man that sun felt good today!!! Good luck if you get out there...
Few boats catching eyes off Cedar river while targeting Browns, Down in the one fish boundry slot the bite has been terrible North of the river in Michigan water a little better South in Wis. Temps pretty much 34 to 36 north and 40-46 South. Six boats with only 1 fish between all of them on Saturday. The river run is peaking about 100 boats in the mouth on Sat and most catching fish.
