Hey guys,

Just booked a few days at the Sall-Mar after talking to Kevin. we are coming from Marblehead, Ohio after several years of frusterating ice fishing around our home grounds of the Erie Islands. We have all our gear and electronics but have never fished LBDN. Was hoping for some input on what to be ready for and what gear is a must on the bay. Specifics like jigging rap sizes, techniques or other lures that work or what equipment is a must, would be appreciated. Not looking for any thing concerning locations or hot spots. Just trying to gather intel on what lures to have and sizes and gear we need to bring. Again any pointers would be appreciated. Born and raised on Erie, so I am more than happy to return the favor if you are planning an erie trip as well. Thanks in advance.

ER

Well, your first mistake was talking to Kevin !!! I wouldn't trust anyone who drinks Hamms beer And eats Burbot on a regular basis!!! LOL!!!

For walleyes the best bet IMO is your Rap style lures in size 5,7,9. Glow tigers are prefered in green, red, perch. Others work too, but the glow lures seem to have an advantage during low light.
Sweedish pimples are my go to for attracting fish. Pimp and a 2 inch minnow and raps naked or tipped with a minnow head are pretty standard walleye fare on the bay. Kevin and Ken have lures they make that I love too. Rattle spoons work also tipped with minnows.

Actions used go from no movement at all to grip it and rip it. Once your marking fish, you'll have to try different methods to see what they want that day. Tip-ups with suckers from 2 ft to 8 ft off bottom is also standard fare. Sucker size depends on what your after. Kevin can help with that.

Electronics.........Vex, Marcum and such or cameras are a must.

Travel on the lake is great right now , but can change as far as snow depth. Trucks, wheelers, sleds, air boats, side bys, argos......all work.

Good portable shack and heaters are a must, unless your renting shacks.

Oh............lots of beer and Kesslers too!!!

Talk to Ol' Kevin (aka) Burbot Breath, and he'll giva ya more details. If ya really want to know where and how to fish up here, you'll have to talk to his wife Theresa!!!

Hope this helps some!!!

Erierider

We'll be there too. Brown Ford with two quads. We'll talk a bit... I'm always open to suggestions too though. We only fish the bay 1-3 times a year. We're 2.5-3 hours away. We go for numbers until March and then switch to a little pig fishing.

Hi all.  I just joined the website.  My son and I are also making the trip up there this weekend.  We plan to just fish Saturday night and Sunday morning as this is our first try fishing LBDN.

While we'd not be disappointed in icing a 12 lb walleye, we'd rather have more action with smaller fish.  I've done some research on various sites and have a couple places picked out to try.  Is there an area in LBDN that produces smaller, eater sized fish or is it all about the same?

There are certain areas during certain time ofthe year that are known for pigs , but best bet right now is go with your gut and poke and hope like the rest. Haven't been out in over a week, and haven't heard any reports that would indicate a pattern. Ice is in great shape.
I have a feeling it's gonna be crazy with people this weekend with the warm spell and such, so, might want to pick a remote spot and go with it.
I personally have a spot picked out for this weekend that I have never fished before and I doubt if there will be anyone crawling up my a$$. I don't mind company, but hate it when people show up at prime times and start makin noise and disrespecting the guys that are making the effort to not disturb the surroundings.

Break in the cold front this weekend and I suspect some might do real well. Hope I'm one of them and good luck to you and your son.
