Because of a death in my wife's family, the past two weekends were spent travelling...but I finally got back out on the ice yesterday afternoon and had an awesome time. It was so nice and warm out that I decided just to walk out somewhere and sit butt-on-a-bucket. I got to my first choice of spots but somebody was already there. Drove to my 2nd choice of locations...somebody there too. As they say, "Third time's the charm", and it sure was. I finally got set up about 4 p.m. and had my first fish on the ice at 4:30, a nice 22 inch walleye. This was caught on a #7 glow purple tiger Rap, a color my buddy Ray has been doing pretty good on all winter. It was a pretty steady stream of fish from that point on to about 6p.m. when I packed up. 2nd fish came on a tip-up with a small sucker, this was a 22 1/2 incher. Then I released a 29 inch beauty caught on the #7 glow purple tiger, then I caught a 25 incher that inhaled a #7 firetiger Rap. Then, I had just lost one jigging when a flag popped up. I went to check that tip-up and my other flag popped up, all the while the graph was lighting up with fish. Usually I don't mess around with tip-ups too much, and this was exactly the reason why. When the fish are coming through I like to be jigging! Well...I managed to lose the fish on the first flag, then I got the tip-up line tangled and decided just to pull it up, put it away and go get the other flag. Sometimes it seems like walleyes have some sort of crazy esp...because as soon as I got close to my tip-up the spool quit spinning, and yup...the fish dropped the bait. This was the best couple of hours of walleye fishing I've had so far this ice-fishing season and I can't wait to get back out there. I marked good numbers of fish, some good ones at that, and was able to take some home for the fry pan. Good luck from all of us in the Bay de Noc area.
Nice job Ken!!! You have the tools and the knowlege!!! I can buy tools all day, but it's that knowlege that pays off...............................or did Kevin tell ya where to go again !!! LMAO!!!
Seriously......nice catch!!!
Slammer!!!
Haha....it was fishy. Smelled a little like walleye and perch...just a little though. We didn't fair well. Sounds like we were in the all wrong spots and too shallow all weekend. We did end up with four keeper perch which is a first for us on LBDN. We stayed on the ice all day Saturday and Sunday. We usually just go after walleye in the morning and evenings and nap through mid day since we're so busy at home. Sort of a fishing and napping vacation.
I did fess up to my wife about the ring when I got home though. She just gave a me an "Ahhhhhh". She knows better. Been together too long and it's been too good. Just had our first daughter in August and she was/is still very understanding about my fishing and hunting. I bought her a new .243 for her birthday in November and she bought an Ice Armor suit with some Christmas money. Couldn't ask for a better woman honestly.
We need a whitefish guide next time. My buddy loves whitefish and we couldn't get on them this weekend during mid-day. Not sure what we're doing wrong. Kevin did tell us they're "fussy" on LBDN though.
Ahhhh...GPT. Glow purple tiger...it's just one of the many custom colors I've painted up. There are only 3 in existence...so far! We ran out of "slayers" (Hali-style lures we make that are killer on perch) in the store, so I've been busy painting more of those, but in between batches of "slayers" I do a few raps and ice darters. I'll post some pics one of these days. Maybe next time you guys come over I can sneak away and do some fishing with you. Glad you remembered your ring...take care,
