The idea of a side by with tracks sounds great, but weight is a factor for early ice. I found out this year after you couldn't drive a vehicle that the atv was good until the snow got too deep. Without a sled there was NO fishing. My buddy bought a sled and we were one of the few out there.
I think ATV and sled is best bet. If I could only have one it would have to be an ATV for year round use. You could always throw tracks on it if you want, but at what cost!!!
Also depends on if you fish alone or with others. There is no good answer. I say ATV or sled or both.
When you figure it out , let us know.
Slammer!!!
A snowmobile is the best for ice fishing in my opinion, I do have both(atv & sled). however if you want to get an atv look at the J-Wheelz to put on them rather than tracks, much cheaper and less stress on the machine. I have never tried them, but you should look at the videos on you tube. I think they would work great on the bay?.......Just some more food for thought?
Thanks Jeff for bringing that to my attention. I have a feeling you just cost me $600.00 + dollars!!!
Wish I would have had them this year. I looked at every video and read just about every article and forum about them. I see no drawback, other than I would have to modify my trailer. Maybe next year. You know as soon as I buy them, we will never have snow again!!! LOL. They look indistructable and easy to put on and will work with my chains. These set up on my Actic cat 700 should be just about unstopable.
Slammer!!!
Slammer, you will be buying Insurance for the life of your atv in the sense that nothing will ever stop you from getting out on the bay....well other than work and the wife's honey-do list !...lol Let me know how they work? they really do look like they are going to be unstoppable, they will even give you the safety of more floatation which how can that be a bad thing!
Damn Jeff , I'm gonna have you talk to my wife for me while I'm ordering a set of these!!! LOL
You make a good point and I think she just might buy the safety issue, unless she wants to get rid of me!!!
I watched some more videos today and am pretty convinced this is the way to go.
Slammer!!!
Ha ha My wife has heard that safety $&*! so many times! now she just laughs at me when I start saying that "s" word, no really honey that gps is about safety! Honest its more important that I find my way home.....right?, the marine radio, the new(used)motor etc. etc. Oh and lets not forget that all important fisherman's rule....That we can't catch this years fish on last years lures. Now, honey, sweat-ums, love of my life! you really don't want me to waste my time out there with these old used & worn out rusted baits now do ya?.....lol Anyways all B.S. aside, I'm feeling your about as lucky as I am, as we can go out doing the things we love to do, all the while getting the wife's blessing's while were doing it!
Mar 12, 2014 · I have a refurbished set of J-wheelzfor sale (www.j-wheelz.com). Normal price is $650, these are like new and are I'm selling for only $399. Let me know ...
Well, it's almost a year later and had been drooling over these Bad Boyz since last year when I was introduced to them her by Jeff, aka mecosmo. Just as I predicted , it cost me a few bucks and NO, she didn't buy the safety bullship presentation.
Picked these up last Friday and am now ready for whatever gets thrown at us. I'm hoping the best feature will be NOT having Tomjohn haul my arse around the bays when it gets too slushy!!! LOL
Will let you know how they work and if any of you have questions, let me know. Thanks for making me spend more money on ice fishing Jeff!!!
P.S. I was right about having to modify the trailer too!!
Well now, anit that a hot looking machine you got there, and Neither snow nor rain nor dark of night will stop you now! you can now tell the little lady that she needs to listen you more often as you really do know what your talking about!.....Here's why, these J-Wheelz have been certified as a legal flotation device from the Madison chain of lakes in Central Wi. The Madison Chain mandates that all atv's, snowmobiles etc. be inspected and certified just to make sure that you have enough square inch's of floatation for the make and model of each machine before being able to legally go out on the ice.........Yes, it is now a registered floatsafety item for sure! and they do look cool I think, and should make for some fun conversations at the boat launch too. If we get enough snow or slush or ? to test them out please let us know how they work.
I don't know about Wisconsin safety rules , but equally impressive is my new safety helmet that attaches to the J-Wheels to keep me afloat . It's permanently attached to my skull ever since my wife found out about the J-Wheels. LOL
I hope to hell in the future , You don't come up with any more ideas for toys for me. I'll keep ya posted on how they work. If your ever up in da area, look me up!!! Good luck and tight lines!!!
